AR, STAR, and Home Connect Information and Links

What is STAR Reading?

STAR Reading is a computerized multiple choice reading assessment that takes approximately 10-15 minutes.  Questions continually adjust to your child’s responses.  If the child’s response is correct, the difficulty level is increased.  If the child misses a question, the difficulty level is reduced.  Students in grades one through five are tested several times a year.

Your child’s reading level is determined in one of two ways:  a STAR Reading test or a grade equivalent score from a standardized test.

What is a ZPD?

Your child’s ZPD is a range of books that will challenge your child without causing frustration or loss of motivation.  Your child will receive a ZPD range after taking a STAR Reading test. It is important for students to read with a high degree of comprehension within their ZPD.

Book levels represent the difficulty of the text.  For example a book level of 4.5 means that the book could likely be read by a student whose reading skills are at the level of a typical fourth grader during the fifth month of school.

What is Accelerated Reader?

AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.  Your child chooses a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace.  When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer.  Passing the quiz with a score of 80 percent of higher is an indication that your child understood what was read.
